A beautiful film about a beautiful work of art that demonstrates how powerful concept and vision are.  I mean, he made this out of plastic sheeting and hot glue… that’s crazy!  That’s awesome!  That’s crazy-awesome!

This was one of the most challenging, yet rewarding bumper videos I’ve made to date.  Challenging because I knew what I wanted and had no idea how to do it, and rewarding because in the process of pulling it off, I learned a bunch of new skills that I am excited to develop further.

Here is more on how it was made:

Admittedly, this bumper is directly… let’s say “inspired” by this video

The colours and flourishes of the “True Love” video were so vibrant and peaceful and beautiful, we had to figure out how it was done. However, the technique proved elusive. Finally, through much trial and even more error, we finally stumbled upon the “colour masking” feature in Final Cut Pro X. There was much rejoicing!

The next challenge was to figure out how to do motion tracking to help make the text seem more like an object in the video rather than an overlay on the video. Again, this proved challenging, but we overcame and there were high fives all around!

And that is what I love about the arts and collaboration - even unintended collaboration (e.g. someone trying to copy someone else’s technique). Ideas don’t just come from nowhere, and true creativity doesn’t happen in a vacuum; it happens in community, as we build off of the amazing work that has come before us.

Also, the music is “Nemo Egg (Main Title)” by the always heartbreakingly beautiful Thomas Newman from the Finding Nemo soundtrack… it just captured the serenity of the idea too perfectly to not use.

Enjoy!

The most recent bumper from Southview Alliance.  I’m rather pleased with it… as is my little girl, since she watches it about 9 times a day.

I find myself absolutely mesmerized by this video.

A great way to spend a night…

A great way to spend a night…

I made this mostly to get a feel for our new Canon 7D, but a couple of other things can be witnessed in it:

1. The power of music to reframe an image. Even the most mundane shots can look like poetry with the right music.

2. Sam is kind of a creep ;)

In regards to the music, it is “The Nest That Sailed the Sky” by Peter Gabriel from his New Blood album. It’s a gorgeous piece that he doesn’t know I used, but I hope he’s okay with it. It was for educational purposes, right?

Nothing but love from me here.

This song makes me cry… and I can’t stop listening.

I love the vibe of this video… It’s like Pink Floyd’s The Wall meets someone like Tim Burton… but different than Tim Burton. And it’s also a great song! Man, this guy is killing it!

This song is blowing up, and rightly so! It’s incredible. And the video is fantastic.

This guy, Gotye (aka Wally), is inspiring me hugely right now, while also bringing me much musical joy. His “Making Making Mirrors” mini-doc made me want to run and quit everything and go create something for the love of it.

I’ll post that video (and many more) soon enough, but for now enjoy the haunting drug that is this.
